At TRIAD Renewable Energy Advisors, we believe the future of wind-power developments needs to be more centralized, more efficient, and much more cost-effective with increased energy production.
We have often thought that much better efficiencies could be realized by changing the overall development design, layout and specifications to lower overall project cost and increase production capture rates with more emphasis on centralized wind production without the reliance of open expanses of land and sporadic wind resources. These are purely conceptual ideas at this time, but we think this “paradigm shift” in the wind energy development could save millions of project funds and increase production output at least tenfold or more.
As Energy demand continues to grow across the country and throughout the world, our energy needs have become even more demanding, but the way we build wind-power developments hasn’t evolved much for several decades.
As Big Tech builds data centers throughout the US — Big Tech will be required to pay for the power lines, interconnection, the substations, and every infrastructure upgrade its facility demands.
State laws have started and may soon require large-load customers add 75 megawatts or more of demand to sign long-term agreements covering all infrastructure costs tied to their projects — rather than spreading those costs across the general rate base. 75 megawatts. That is the threshold. Any data center, AI facility, or crypto mining operation that demands that much power must foot its own bill — every dollar of it — before connecting to the grid.
We have focused on developing and pursuing design-concepts that can easily adapt to different types of existing and planned wind-power developments surpassing current national and regional energy production and needs.
These concepts are simple, efficient, easy to maintain with capabilities exceeding current energy production while reducing overall EPC costs within many design, specification and construction elements.
The main concept is based upon a forced-air wind-power system, directed through an enclosed wind tunnel, duct-like structure that will allow WTGs to produce energy on a controlled constant basis without reliance upon sporadic and unreliable natural-wind resources primarily in remote locations far from grid and substation facilities.
Because of this type of development concept, built on a completely centralized location, it may offer several advantages in overall cost reductions in the following EPC contracts:
• Centralized location adjacent to, or near existing and new-build grid/substations, utilizing facilities with possibilities for future expansion
• Possible WTG cost reductions through various size, spec and installation efficiencies
• Substantial reduction in interconnection line and collection system line distances resulting in much lower material and installation cost
• Substantial reduction in tower height and blade diameter and length assemblies. A second design-engineering option is to have WTGs installed at, or near ground-level.
• Substantial reduction in trucking, transport and crane-assisted cost of all wind construction equipment elements and related materials.
• Substantial reduction of operations & maintenance costs
• Substantial reduction of ALL project related insurance coverage expenses
• Landowner lease payments could be substantially reduced or eliminated altogether
• Landowners looking to activate underutilized property adjacent to existing substation/grid property
Because this type of wind energy development concept, built through a more centralized and cost-efficient manner, it may offer several other advantages:
• Overall EPC cost reductions with increased energy production
• Faster deployment compared to traditional construction
• Much more modern, efficient and centralized design
• Flexible layouts and expandable configurations
• Scalable solutions for wind developers and landowners
• Substantial reduction of impacts to wildlife… especially our feathered aviators in flight.
• Reduction/removal of visual impacts caused from wind power assemblies dotting our scenic landscapes, hills, valleys, plains and mountainous, desert and coastal regions.
But beyond the concept itself, the bigger mission is simple:
Other forward-thinking concepts considered by wind-power, production-oriented countries moving ahead in wind-power development concepts include: High altitude wind dirigibles and ocean-floor current, blade-turbine platforms. Are there possible and viable ground-level, land-based, alternatives? We believe there are.
Creation of more attainable wind-power development opportunities with better and more efficient design, engineering and specification options. Across the country there are countless pieces of land and existing facilities that could support this type of wind-energy production development if the right mind-set existed.
Industry and world changing conversations happening with developers, landowners, wind development operators and those who visualize the potential for new types of energy production facilities.
The future of wind-power developments won’t come from one single solution but innovation in how we design, build, produce and deploy new efficiencies will absolutely play a role.
This isn’t a question of this concept becoming a reality… it is a question of how soon. The wind-energy development industry needs a paradigm shift in project design and system operations utilizing manufactured/forced-air wind-power that can produce wind energy that will translate into at least 3X more energy production while realizing 30%-40% project cost reductions versus current-day wind-development project-templates.
